The George Washington University's Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine is pleased to offer a Fellowship in Acute Pain Medicine & Regional Anesthesia for a Summer 2023 start date. The fellowship is designed to provide enhanced clinical abilities, teaching and research to prepare for success as an academic leader in clinical practice. Formal learning as a member fo the Acute Pain Medicine service is complemented by a subspecialty didactic lecture series and journal club. The team is multi-specialty and multi-disciplinary, incorporating best-practices for the delivery of multi-modal pain management with medical student, resident, nurse and nurse practitioner support.
This unique offering in the nation's capital is an unaccredited, acute pain medicine and regional anesthesia fellow and junior faculty hybrid position that will split 70:30 (fellow:faculty) with commensurate experience, pay and benefits. The curriculum will follow the ACGME-accredited fellowship requirements, and afford dedicated administrative time for teaching and research in the subspecialty.
Rotations will include teaching service rotations on the Acute Pain Service of the George Washington University Hospital as well as participation in the GW Block Team. All core rotations will occur at the George Washington University Hospital where our team of 3-5 Acute Pain Medicine anesthesiologists will supervise the fellow's learning. Elective offerings will include research, palliative care, global health or health policy. Overall, fellows will participate in fellowship-focused rotations for 7 months and they will work as a junior faculty member for 4 months with pro-rated call responsibilities. Moonlighting opportunities will be available (pending Director approval) as long as they do not interfere with fellowship training obligations.
All fellows will be supported to participate in one national conference and fellows will receive membership in ASRA, ASA and the DCSA. Licensing and malpractice are also included in benefits package. Interested fellows will be supported to participate in one regional anesthesia workshop.
The Acute Pain Medicine Division of the Department of Anesthesiology, led by Director Vanessa Starks, MD, performed over 3,500 blocks and consultations in 2019. The service boasts several innovative techniques, including a "Mobile Block Team," and a postoperative home-catheter program. Recent press includes GW Pain Medicine physicians speaking up for opioid alternatives, with visits to capital hill to support prescription reform as well as touting innovative practices to manage pain.
Current clinical research efforts in the Division of Acute Pain Medicine reflect interests in clinical pharmacology, techniques, and devices. Fellows will be expected to participate in research of their choosing under the mentorship of a faculty investigator. Presentation of findings at an appropriate national meeting is strongly encouraged.
Fellows will have access to the entire library of educational materials, including many key obstetric anesthesia texts, via the Himmelfarb Library. They will also have dedicated office space with a desk and a computer in the Department's Offices.
