All residents spend at least two months on the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology service at George Washington University Hospital. Residents are taught invasive monitoring techniques, applied cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology, and principles of cardiopulmonary bypass.
Cardiac anesthesiology at GW cares for all variety of cardiac surgery, including coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacement or repair, aortic dissection and all other scheduled, emergent and advanced cardiac pathology. Our team practices with the cutting edge of skills, including analgesic blocks, Cardiac ERAS and advanced monitoring with the resident as the focal learner. In partnership with our team in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, we manage ECMO, aortic balloon pumps and LVAD technologies.
